Enrichment!
15 June 2010Money, money money
There has been a ‘money’ theme to maths lessons recently for Year 5 and 6 pupils, as part of the school’s Enrichment Programme.
The aim was to provide the children with an economic understanding and the opportunity to apply their maths skills in the real world. Topics studied included supermarket offers, pricing, Fair Trade produce, pay slips, interest rates, investments, VAT, exchange rates and inflation, and a financial expert visited the school to talk about current economics and answer questions.
Each lesson had a practical focus based on topical economic issues and the pupils applied what they had learned to a number of tasks, such as creating their own offers to entice supermarket shoppers. The project culminated with a competition to design new bank notes.
Mrs Sandra Antoniou, Head of Maths, commented: ‘There was a real buzz in the maths lessons. The children were particularly interested in projecting food prices forward following recent trends; they calculated a kilogram of cheese would be £37.00 in 2044!’
