Garden Festival Winners!

14 September 2009

Duncombe was delighted to win both the best school garden and best kept school floral innovative container categories at the Hertford in Bloom Awards held in the Castle grounds this weekend. Towards the end of the Summer Term, Duncombe was visited by the Mayor of Hertford, Councillor David Poole and his team of judges, who spent a sunny afternoon in the garden with members of the Gardening Club, which is open to any pupil from the Main School. The garden has floral beds and vegatable plots as well as two scarecrows, Scruffy Fred and Tattybogle. All the work is undertaken by the pupils and they practise recycling wherever possible.

Teacher Jean Greathead said: "The children worked so hard to create their garden, enjoying everything from growing floral displays to harvesting and tasting fruit and vegetables."

The shields awarded to the pupils at the ceremony are now proudly on display in the entrance hall at the school.
