Sports

At Duncombe we consider sport to be an integral part of education and development. The aim of the sports programme is to introduce the children to a health and fitness awareness that they will carry with them into adulthood. There are specialist sports staff who teach from the Reception stage onwards with both expertise and enthusiasm and we have a floodlit Astroturf pitch and an all-weather athletics track, allowing full year-round use. Duncombe has a strong sporting record and a number of our pupils have achieved County, Regional and National recognition whilst at Duncombe.

The main sports for boys are football, rugby, cricket, athletics and tennis and for girls, netball, hockey, rounders, athletics and tennis. All children swim once a week from Year 2 and in the Spring Term we hold our annual Swimming Gala. Junior and Senior Sports Days are held in the Summer Term to which all parents are invited. There are even one or two races for the parents themselves!

In all areas of sport, a sense of fair play and team spirit are encouraged as well as a desire to win fairly and lose graciously. We encourage healthy competition, offering the teaching and practising of skills in lessons together with both inter-house matches and fixtures against other schools. A calendar is published at the start of each term which contains a full programme of matches and tournaments for the different age groups and at various levels of competition.

The After School Activities programme offers a range of additional sporting opportunities, some of which are perennial favourites and others which change seasonally. Self defence, trampolining, gymnastics, basketball, golf, sailing and horse riding are just some of the options.

A highlight of our Duncombe year is the Easter ski trip which is extremely popular with children, parents and staff alike. Recent destinations have included the USA, Canada, Norway, Austria, Italy and France.
