Our children join the Reception class in the year they turn five but they don’t have too move far.
We have kept our Reception class at Duncombe Treetops to give them a little longer in familiar surroundings before they move to the Main School building. This gives them an early opportunity to be role models for the younger children and to take on positions of responsibility within the secure setting.
There is nothing more important to us than the happiness and wellbeing of our children; this takes priority above all else. We strive to create a warm and calm environment, where children are nurtured and respected.
Head of Early Years, Mrs Katie Copeman has oversight of pastoral care and works alongside our class teachers and room leaders on all pastoral matters.
Reception works to a weekly curriculum theme, designed to challenge and capture the children’s interests. Our mornings focus on a mixture of funky finger activities, enhancing fine motor skills, literacy and mathematics tasks. Through engaging games and formal activities, lessons provide a foundation of understanding, helping to build their knowledge.
Following lunch in the Warren Restaurant, our Reception children enjoy free play on activities that encourage all the areas of learning. The children have quiet individual reading time with their teachers and enjoy story or circle time at the end of the school day.
Reception children especially enjoy our Forest School, where they learn through the outdoors, building dens and even whittling wood wearing protective gloves and under close supervision. George, our school skeleton, also pays a visit to Forest School and the children collect sticks to make their own version.
Treetops is led by Katie Copeman who has 13 years teaching experience of working in both the state and independent sector. She is head of the Early Years and oversees all children and staff in treetops.
Each reception class is led by an experienced class teacher and has a highly qualified nursery nurse for support.
