Duncombe School is an accredited Forest School, offering outdoor education and activities to our Early Years..
Forest School gives the children the chance to learn and explore in a safe outdoor environment. Following The Forest School principles, our lessons develop the children’s curiosity, confidence, self-esteem, creativity, communication skills, knowledge of the natural environment and the ability to assess risk.
Activities are carefully planned to meet both these principles and the aims of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
We have our own Forest School area, The Dell – a large sunken woodland area that was the house’s sunken garden in Victorian times and now makes a perfect location for our pupils to experience the outdoor world in a safe environment.
Children start to visit The Dell from Kindergarten and still enjoy it when they reach age 11. Activities range from building dens to constructing skeletons from twigs and going on a bugs hunt. Lessons in The Dell are carefully planned to teach children about the natural environment, how to use their initiative to solve problems, work as teams and handle risk.
Our staff have been trained to supervise Forest School activities and we are accredited by Down the Woods, an organisation that provides information and training on outdoor education.
What our parents say
Forest School has been a firm favourite of both my children while they were in Duncombe Treetops. They love that it’s dedicated time to be allowed to get dirty, and also a chance to explore in the woods and trees, and eat marshmallows! They would both come home with various objects they had made, such as hedgehog houses, ladybird stones and stick dogs, and all were proudly displayed in our own garden.
Music and Dance Studio
In 2012 Duncombe opened a Music and Dance Studio on site. During the day the studio becomes alive with the sound of music with music lessons of all year groups and choir practice. After school the room takes on a different look with the beauty of dance becoming the home to after school activities such as tap and street dance.
Duncombe’s drama students achieve consistent success in prestigious local and national events and a 100% pass rate in LAMDA Speech and Drama exams for Years 3-6.
With a floodlit Astroturf pitch and an all-weather 75m athletics track, we are able to encourage our children all year round in sporting activities for both local and national competitions. We also take part in competitions and tournaments with other schools in sports such as football, netball and hockey competitions to name a few.
We’re proud of our close links to the community and benefit from local amenities including the Hartham Common Leisure centre for swimming, Bengeo Cricket Club and Haileybury School for various sporting events.
